On November 26th, 2005 the Federal Government signed an agreement with twenty bands across Canada to move towards Native jurisdiction of education. This is a huge step forwards for the Heiltsuk people as we take greater control over our education and continue to work for parity with public schools over funding.
Over the last few months, Project coordinators Dawn Wilson and Jacqui Humchitt have been meeting with the Heiltsuk Tribal Council, Bella Bella Community School Society, as well as open sessions for the Community. These meetings have helped develop the education plan according to the needs of the Heiltsuk people, and have helped to establish the goals for Heiltsuk Education.

Professional Development Workshop On November 10th, Brenda Humchitt and Pauline Waterfall presented a workshop at the Bella Bella Community School on the development of education of modern education in Bella Bella. Staff members were presented with an educational history of how the Heiltsuk People have implemented jurisdiction over the education of their children. |
